In this article we'll show you how to use the free Citra emulator for Nintendo 3DS games and exploit a little-known feature called QR codes.

What are QR Codes?

QR stands for 'Quick Response' - aptly named given their purpose. These unique barcodes can be scanned using most modern smartphone cameras (or even certain dedicated readers) and will reveal hidden information stored within them, such as URLs, contact details or... in our case - cheat codes!

2. Next thing to do is load up Animal Crossing: New Leaf into citra itself - simple enough! Simply browse through your 3DS game library until you find ACNL and double-click on its icon.

Unlocking QR Codes The Usual Way

1. Visit the Able Sisters Shop.

This charming little boutique, run by those lovely triplet sisters - Stella, Mable and Mirabelle - sells all sorts of wonderful items including some very rare ones that can only be obtained through special means... like scanning QR codes!

To find Main Street (where you'll inevitably end up anyway), head north from the train station until you reach a cobblestone path under an archway. The Able Sisters should now be visible on your left-hand side.

2. Scan the QR Code

Once inside, simply approach one of the sisters behind their respective counters and tap 'A' to bring up a menu. From here select 'Scan' from near the bottom-right corner of the screen (looks like two little white squares).

Pointing your DS3 controller's right stick at any blank space on-screen should now activate the camera viewfinder. Hold down R2/Rb until you see four black-and-white squares appear - these are the boundaries within which to capture an image.

Take a quick snap of whatever QR code has piqued your interest using either a real-life smartphone or even just use Paintbrush/Photoshop etcetera on PC (as long as it's saved out in .png format naturally speaking).

3. Enjoy Your New Loot!

Once scanned successfully, you'll be rewarded with all sorts of wonderful goodies including rare items that can only be obtained through this method - so keep scanning those QR codes and happy collecting!
